There is a slim chance you will find EXACTLY what you are looking for. You might find something slightly better or something slightly worse.

2. The secondhand store is NOT a yard sale. All items are priced as marked and not open for negotiation as a general rule unless you're spending in excess of $200.

3. The secondhand store is NOT the dollar store. Expect to pay more for items of value. i.e. Electronics, tools, etc.

4. The secondhand store is NOT a wholesaler. You will be charged tax.

5. The secondhand store is NOT a business opportunity. No soliciting!

6. The secondhand store is NOT Walmart. Everything is sold as is, so check it over. No refunds. No returns.

7. Not everything at the secondhand store is used. Some merchandise is actually *gasp* new! Expect to pay a little more for new items.

8. The secondhand store is NOT a consignment shop. We don't particularly want or need your consignments to be and remain successful. No offense. There are consignment shops for that.

9. The secondhand store means quality at a fraction of the cost. EVERYTHING works to the best of our knowledge. We will even plug it up for you, but don't get crazy. Hooking up an entire stereo system is a bit much.

10. The secondhand store appreciates your business. Remember that above all else.

10 Positive Things I've Learned Since My Lay-Off

I was laid off from my job of 2.5 years last December. I lived out in Las Vegas at the time, and that lay-off began a journey for which I was hardly prepared. I eventually moved back home to North Carolina and have been looking for full-time employment ever since. Here are few things that have held true over this last year.

1. Work in any form...is fulfilling.
I am finding myself enjoying things that I used to abhor like cleaning, dishes and even scooping the cat box. I have even applied for jobs that I couldn't fathom before just to have *something* to do. It is surprising how much a job can define your life and even who you are.

2. I CAN freelance write for a living.
Shortly after I lost my job, I applied online for a writing job. I got it, and I could actually do it for a living. It pays good enough that it is feasible. I have yet to reach my financial goals which brings me to...

3. Goal setting should be secondary only to breathing.
I was required to set goals at my last job. I scoffed at the idea at first and was almost fired as a result. I found that setting goals for work made me want to set goals for my personal life. Having goals gives me something concrete to work toward as opposed to fleeting thoughts of "I want this, so I'll do this to get it".

4. Home is where the heart is.
As cliche as it sounds, it is also true. Not only had I lost a good chunk of my identity as a result of my job loss, I might as well have been living in Egypt. I was 2500 miles from my roots, my family and guaranteed meals. While jobless at home hasn't been easier per se, it has been more comforting.

5. $8 per hour isn't the end of the world.
I made a decent salary in Las Vegas and had a prestigious position as one of 10+ pioneers of a brand new department. It was and exiting opportunity and the first time that I could officially say "I am a professional writer". The reality of the region where I now live is $8 an hour is "decent". I've accepted this over the last several months, and while I aspire to more just as anyone else would...8 bucks an hour won't kill ya.

6. Living with your parents won't kill you.
Moving back in with my parents at 33 was about the last thing I wanted to do. Without going into too much detail...it is stifling. The place is small and I am reminded everyday that I can't afford space and privacy. I am also reminded that my parents love me and care if I am eating or not. Living with your parents won't kill you...quite the contrary, it will sustain you as you get back on your feet.

7. The secondhand merchandise industry is fun and profitable.
In October, I went to work part-time at a secondhand store. It was a more than welcome opportunity after 10 months trying to slide by on my tax refund and freelancing. The secondhand business is HOT right now with the economy rocking nearly at an all-time low. I work in a giant treasure chest. How fitting for a pirate.

8. Mark was right...
about so many things. Mark Linsenbardt is my former boss and I learned so much from him. I've billed him as the best boss in the entire world. Mark's big thing was goal-setting. As I said earlier, he almost fired me once for not having goals. Mark was right about your job funding your personal life. One definitely does not have much of a personal life without the proper funds to secure it. Mark was right that no one can make you feel and you are ultimately responsible for yourself, your life and your level of satisfaction with both.

9. Television is not a necessity.
I have survived now mostly without TV for 7 months and 29 days. Largely this is in part to the copious amounts of shows available on the internet. I have managed to stay abreast of most of the shows I most enjoy. Others, I have managed updates here and there at friends' homes, so I have managed to survive the near total absence of the boob tube in my life. While it is not a necessity...it is certainly a fervent want on my part.

10. Never give up.
I have never been one who was much for giving up. I can't say that I am the most driven individual, but there are not many things that I've thrown in the towel on. In the last year, I have faced some tough challenges. I've listened to others put me down. I've put myself down, but I have not given up on one thing...not a thought, an endeavor or a dream.

You know, I've had it a lot easier through this recession than many who have lost their homes and most everything they had worked for their entire lives. So if I were to challenge those people...I would say never give up. You can only grow and become a better and stronger person through adversity. I'm thankful for every minute of life that I am given and in the words of Kanye..."That, that, that, that don't kill me, only makes me stronger."

My Byline in the College Paper

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 36px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uLicrVjd6YE/SuuXz-1yiKI/AAAAAAAAAZk/1ITX-VKDmtc/s320/TheCampbellTimes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398575497631402146" />

I did some writing for the college newspaper when I was in school. I had to drop a class which left me one credit hour short of keeping my financial aid. A quick clamoring through the one credit hour practicums landed me on The Campbell Times. Theories and ideas are popping up nationwide, but Fuel Legacy International is coming to the table with a quick solution that will carry into the future. The Nanotech eeFuel Additive is the only liquid nanotechnology fuel enhancer on the market that works with multiple fuel types.

Fuel Legacy's Nanotech eeFuel Additive is an immediate answer to conserving fuel, protecting engines, and defending the environment. It is the only additive available on the market that works with gasoline, diesel, and bio-fuels. This makes eeFuel a viable solution for not only the average driver, but the farmer, trucker, and heavy equipment operator as well.

Nanotech eeFuel Additive serves a mult-purpose function when added to a vehicle's fuel supply. I eventually combined that blog with another one, moved it to self-hosted WordPress, and sold it.

Feel free to download this book and use it at will. Some of the information is old and some of it is not. It is written for use mainly with Blogger, but has some pertinent links and resources. It also demonstrates my e-book writing skills.

Click icon to download:

Marketing Your New Blog

In this post, I will compare two traffic trackers that I have used.

Sitemeter, the popular one, and MVTracker, the one I had never heard of until I tried it. I will review each tracker on the following five points and then give you my pick at the end.

- Ease of use
- Presentation
- Stats Available
- Other tools
- Upgrades

- Ease of Use Sitemeter is an easy tracker to use. The default view tells you right away how many views and pageviews you have had for the current day.

The left navigation allows for one-click views of the various stats and charts available.

- Presentation
Charts and stats are presented in a clean and concise manner. It's not difficult at all to see exactly who is looking at your site by merely viewing the numbers and graphs presented.

- Stats Available
The following stats, graphs, and views are available with Sitemeter:

GENERAL
- Summary - this is the default view shown above
- Who's On? - this shows visitors on your page in the last 20 minutes

RECENT VISITORS
- By Details - shows ISP information of your visitors
- By Referrals - displays sites that have referred your visitors
- By World Map - shows visitors as blips on a world map image
- By Location - shows city, state, country, country flag
- By Out Clicks - shows any links, ads, etc. that users clicked when they exited your site.
- By Entry Pages - shows what page they entered you site on
- By Exit Pages - shows what page they were one when they left your site

VISITS
- Current Day - shows visitors for the current day
- Previous 7 Days - shows visitors for the previous 7 days
- Previous 30 Days - you get the picture.
- Previous 12 Months
VISITS AND PAGE

VIEWS
- Current Day - shows a bar graph of visits and page views for the current day

- Previous 7 Days - shows a bar graph of visits and page views for the previous 7 days
- Previous 30 Days - you get the picture.
- Previous 12 Months

-
Other Tools
Sitemeter has a few other tools available. Traffic Prediction under General predicts your traffic for the coming hour, day, week, and month based on the current, hour, day week, and month.

In addition, Sitemeter has a Knowledge Center, and full support via e-mail.

- Upgrades
Sitemeter does have a premium upgrades starting at $6.95 per month.

In conclusion, I couldn't find much online about the benefits of a paid Sitemeter account, but to see some CONS on this track, read more here. There is not differentiation between visits and uniques in Sitemeter.

- Ease of Use
I happened upon MVTracker in a thread on Digital Point forums. I decided to install it for testing on my second blog so that I could write this comparison. The general appearance of MVTracker is not as clean as Sitemeter, but there is a lot more information displayed in the default view. It displays information for the current
day and then gives percentages of an increase or decrease in traffic based on the previous day as well as the highest traffic day.

The default view list so much information in fact, that it's too much to list here...you may never had to click away from the default when using this tracker. It puts all the information right up front...including uniques.

- Presentation
As I said, the presentation of MVTracker isn't as clean and clear as Sitemeter, but that's because there is loads more information. Get a load of all this clickage:

There is every view known to man. Dun dun dun...and as I was writing this post, I found out why there is so much info in the default view...because none of this clickage is available in the free version. See Upgrades below.

- Stats Available
Pictures are worth a thousand words and all of these are in the default view...no clicking:

Not as clean as Sitemeter's bar graph, but informative nonetheless and this one included uniques.

- Other Tools
MVTracker has some SEO tools that are pretty useful. A couple of them are for premium accounts only, but you can research Hot Keywords, and see keywords that getting the uniques:

<

This screen shot shows a portion of list of over 54,000 results. There is also a Keyword Research tool that works pretty much like Google's keyword tool.

The Keyword Analyzer allows user to put in the URL of any page and see how many times various keywords are used. For blogs, use the post permalink. Very nifty tool.

Link Popularity shows you backlinks for the following: Yahoo!, Google, AltaVista, MSN, and All The Web.

The Tool List goes on and on and the majority of them are available for free account users.
- Upgrades
MVTracker's premium service cost a very reasonable $3.95 a month. It unlocks all
the views and features outlined in this comparison that I found to be unavailable with my free service and then some.

MY PICK
My pick is definitely MVTracker for the following reasons:
- packed with features
- beyond informative default view including unique visitor information
- cheaper upgrade
- more tools

Article originally posted in February of 2008 on waxingpoetic75.com

Things to Consider When Starting a Blog

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 220px; height: 211px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uLicrVjd6YE/SkW5XYijckI/AAAAAAAAAWo/bXSWusgXP48/s320/68597213_574d0f8a5a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351887543575212610" />
Let's outline some things to consider when starting a new blog.

- Public or Private?
This is the decision that will define the purpose of your blog. A blog can be used
for thousands of things. A shortened term for the phrase "web log", a blog is exactly that: a log that is maintained on the web. Blogs basically started out being something that was like a diary or journal where one could write personal thoughts, rants, and musings for others to read...or not.

Most, if not all, blogging platforms give bloggers the option to keep their blog private or share their writings with groups like family, friends, co-workers, up to a public place that anyone with an internet connection and the address can view.

So, the first thing you should determine when starting a new blog is whether you want it to be public or private.

- What do you want this blog to accomplish?
What is the goal you have in mind when starting your blog? Is it going to be your personal space to write about your life? Is it a poetry or photo blog where you catalog your poems and photos...or maybe collected poems and photos from across the internet? Is it written solely for the reader? Do you have an area of expertise and you are blogging to share your knowledge? There is no limit to what you can use your blog for. You should have a general goal in mind when you begin.

- Anonymous or Real Name?
A lot of people who blog assume a username or handle. This allows them to maintain anonymity and enables some people the freedom to post anything at all without fear of being known. For example, if you have a troublesome boss and you are using your blog as a forum to vent your frustration, you wouldn't necessarily want to use your real name unless your blog was set to private. I kept my identity anonymous before I came out as a lesbian.

Deciding how you want to be known is really up to you. If your blog is private, then it doesn't really matter either way. If your blog is public and you are blogging mainly to gain readership, you need to decide if you want the whole world to know to know who you are and be able to find your blog using your real name...or not.

- Where will you post?
Ah...the ever important question...what blogging platform or software will you use? There are hundreds of sites that host free blogs. If you're not really trying to make money with your blog through advertising, you can choose any one of these like LiveJournal, Xanga, MySpace,
Yahoo! 360, etc. Any one of these will suit your needs well and they are all loaded with features for personalizing and customizing your experience. These sites will also allow you to network with friends, family, and other bloggers at your leisure.

If you are going for a more professional blog where you plan to generate revenue with advertising there are also several options. The most popular by far are Blogspot and WordPress.

- Will you allow comments?
Again, this question is based on whether or not your will make your blog public or private. If you blog is public, will it be a place where you will allow others to comment on your writing? Commenting is an excellent way to create a sense of community on your blog. It allows your readers to respond to you and allows you to speak directly to them as individuals.

You will need to prepare yourself for unwanted comments right along with the good ones though and this is why this decision has to be made. In my experience, comments have always been a part of my blog. When I maintained a personal blog, comments were always a forum where I received different insights and advice on life situations. I would never disable the comments on my blog. They are much to valuable to me.

- Will you promote?
This would depend upon who you want reading your blog. If your blog is for friends and family to keep up with your while you are away at college, then you would tell only your friends and family about your blog. If you are blogging for traffic and readership then you would promote your blog by submitting your URL to search engines and to blog directories so that it could be easily found by large numbers of people. In addition, there are ways that you can pay to promote your blog, but this would only be viable if you have something to advertise like a product you are trying to sell or an affiliate program you are promoting.

Once you have considered these factors, you will have the answers needed to create your new blog. Don't waste anymore time...welcome to the world of blogging!!!

Article originally posted in February of 2008 on waxingpoetic75.com
Photo: Nicki-G from Flickr under Creative Commons

Listen Up, Las Vegas

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 184px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uLicrVjd6YE/SkW2vKpziFI/AAAAAAAAAWg/zs2-WO4Fc3w/s200/183076698_d82a744d17.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351884653629507666" />
I drive about an hour a day in this city...30 minutes to and 30 minutes from work. I try to make it a point not to drive much more than that...at least not outside of my "region" of town. Why? Because you people drive like maniacs!!!

I could make an endless list of areas in which you fail to exhibit cognitive and intelligent driving skills on a daily basis. I will now take this opportunity to
demonstrate your stupidity. Give heed to the following tips:

- Learn what "right-of-way" is and when you do and DO NOT have
it.

- First, learn when and where to merge, then join all the other morons in turn signal school.

- When I am turning right on green, it is NOT okay for you to turn left on green ANYWHERE NEAR ME. I will put a large dent in your vehicle and then you will buy
me a new car.

- When I look in my rear view mirror, and all I can see is your hood emblem, YOU ARE TOO CLOSE, STUPID. Learn about safe following distance, and how important it is for you to use it when you are being "RAM tough" or "Humming". Why? Because you will plow into my small, fairly economical car...and then YOU will buy me a new one. That is, if I am not hurt, maimed, or otherwise no longer in need of said car.

- You know, if I happened to miss the exact millisecond when the traffic light changes, do NOT honk your horn at me. Your mother should have taught you that is rude and you are acting like an impatient child. Wherever you are going will be there when you get there, so SHUT UP.

- You can flip me off all you want. I will blow you kisses.

- ARGH! When you are riding a bicycle, DO NOT ride on the street unless it happens to be one of those areas of town where you have your own little lane. I know, I know...bicycles are supposed to follow the same traffic laws as cars, and you have every right to be on the street, but EVERYONE ELSE ON A BIKE USES THE SIDEWALK EXCEPT FOR YOU, MAN!!!

- When I have one car length of space in front of me. THAT IS NOT FOR YOU AND YOUR
STUPID SUV THAT I CAN'T SEE AROUND. That is me exercising safe following distance. Look and Learn.

- If I let the car in front of you in, that doesn't automatically mean that I will let you in as well and to force your big SUV in that close to my small, fairly
economical car is RUDE...and you didn't even throw up a wave or anything. Well, you are NOT welcome.

- Executing a U-turn from the far right turn lane is about 7 shades of illegal. You are really asking for that dent in the side of your vehicle.

- Creating parking spaces is illegal. If you are too lazy to walk across the parking lot...it's a problem. Some of you could really use multiple walks across the parking lot, myself included...too much cheap casino food, I guess.

- DO NOT stop in the middle of traffic on a three-lane road to let someone turn across. Individuals in the other two lanes cannot and do not want to read your mind. You have just loosed an idiot driving sideways across traffic. Accidents will ensue.

- Driving like a bat out of Hades and weaving in and out of lanes is not going to get you there any faster. Leave 30 minutes early. Whatever it is, will be there when you arrive.

- Drunk driving is for the ultimate moron. Unless you aspire to be one, I suggest you make travel arrangements.

Article originally posted in October of 2007 on waxingpoetic75.com
Photo: jparise from Flickr under Creative Commons

Setting Goals For Your Blog

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 198px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uLicrVjd6YE/SkW1uvuaGbI/AAAAAAAAAWY/ZNUrp7L9ttQ/s200/1644961701_5d6ba79d31.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351883546889427378" />
If you are serious about blogging then it's time to set some serious goals. The American Heritage Dictionary defines the term goal as:

n. The purpose toward which an endeavor is directed; an objective.

First things first...what is the purpose of your blog? Whether you are keeping a personal blog or blogging for the universe, setting some well-planned goals will help you focus on the purpose of your blog. My goal system is pretty complex. I use a spiral notebook and I track both weekly and daily goals for my blogs. My blogs are a borderline full-time job. I spend on average probably 5 hours a day working on my blogs in various ways...including reading other blogs, networking, writing, designing, etc.

Keeping both weekly and daily goals keeps me focused and on my toes. My system works well for me. It helps me to write things down by hand. On one page I will outline my weekly goals: What do I want to accomplish with my blogs this week? Some examples of recently accomplished weekly goals would be launching weekly posts and designing logos for those posts. I do a Wednesday and a Friday weekly post in addition to regular posting on both of my blogs. On the pages following my weekly goals, I outline my goals for each day. The daily goals consist of a list of several things that will help me accomplish the larger objectives on my weekly goal list. For example, I am in the process of learning Adobe Illustrator. I list this as a goal on my weekly goals...maybe something like "Complete 5 tutorials" for the week.

In my daily goals, I list "Complete 1 Illustrator tutorial" for each day. This system can be converted for use on a computer simply by using Word, Excel, or even notepad in the same way. Or...you can be totally Web 2.0 and track your goals online. One of the simplest free online goals trackers is http://www.joesgoals.com There's nothing to download, it's easy to share with friends if you want to, and it's FREE.

Setting goals for your blog will help you keep your purpose in the forefront and
reach a level of accomplishment. If you are a beginning blogger or a seasoned veteran of the medium, goal-setting will make a big difference in your level of productivity.

Article originally posted in November of 2007 on waxingpoetic75.com
Photo: Eric Kilby
